“Won’t you be my neighbor?”

Just a little Kindness can make a World of Difference

I just saw WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR, a documentary celebrating the life and achievements of Fred Rogers, of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood fame. It is time well spent. Fred Rogers was the real deal. He truly was the way he appeared to be, and he truly cared about children. Sure, his outlook and mannerisms probably contributed to a lot of derisive (and in some cases, mean-spirited) humor at his expense. The subject of Mr. Rogers parodies is handled in the documentary and he addressed it with customary grace and good humor. In an increasingly cynical, enervated age, it’s nice to remember there are still people who are genuinely, not pretend kind. The documentary does a great job of portraying his basic philosophy. I was too old to watch his show as a kid, but I have nothing but admiration for his achievement. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, including mine. There’s a thread of melancholy running through this film.. maybe a reminder of what society has lost.
