The conversion of board/card/dice games to Ipad and Ipod apps moves on! Here are two that just sort of “showed up” out of nowhere, and I’m picking them up shortly.
ZOMBIE DICE, from Steve Jackson Games
ZOMBIE DICE is a game I own in analog form and have reviewed in a previous post. I’m sure this wasn’t a skull-cracker to convert to an app– just a couple of random number generators and set collection codes. However, the theme is what makes this game fly, and SJG knows it. The graphics really sell this game. I recommend the dice game as a silly little time filler when waiting in line or at a Chinese restaurant or something. As a pass-around app, it would be perfect.
Game play is pretty simple. You just make the app roll dice, collect brains (you’re the zombie) and avoid shotgun blast results:
As I have mentioned already, the theme pushes the game:
This wouldn’t be nearly as fun with regular dice graphics.. though I could see it as being possible to play it that way. Anyway, the basic app is FREE! The upgraded DELUXE app is .99 cents. I know where my money is going.
I just hope the folks at SJG get off their butts and make a cool shared app for Zombie Dice’s companion, CTHULHU DICE. That’s a little trickier, as the mechanics are a rewrite of “Put and Take”, the old bar dice top game.
MARTIAN CHESS, from Neon Surge
Martian Chess is the mother of all games in the unique “Pyramids/Icehouse” system created by Andrew Looney of Looney Labs. I’m not sure, but I think Martian Chess was the first game offered as a commercial game in the system, which has spawned hundreds of variants– the Pyramids system is nothing less than an abstract game development kit consisting of “Stashes”– sets of Pyramids that are small, medium and large in size. There are a huge amount of potential games hidden in these things. So it is fitting that the granddaddy of all of them, Martian Chess, is now an ipod and ipad app. And it’s FREE!
I think there might have been a bit of a tiff with the folks at Looney labs but perhaps that was settled when the game was offered for..FREE! (did I mention free?)
For a freebie, Martian Chess has a lot of options.. 2 player, 1 player versus AI, passaround, network play over 3G or wireless.
The game scales up to IPAD level screen size nicely, allowing for FOUR players.
I’m delighted the Icehouse system is making it to Ipod/Ipad these days, and I sincerely hope Andy Looney will okay further development. I’d love to see the venerable ZENDO make it to the Ipod/Ipad/Iphone platform as a sort of shared logic game.. or perhaps a game as simple as TREEHOUSE as a quick two player time waster. The field is wide open.
And that’s the latest for this week!
